Successive Governments have been committed to placing Statutory provisions on Local Government to provide new homes. This and the wish for increased tourism, without any possibility of public transport being an alternative in the short term, only increases the pressure on the present road system.
In addition to the rapidly changing residential population (who seek more rather than less freedom of movement) and with Local Authorities having no power to stop further buildings, there is little that will be done to stop further use of roads in the foreseeable future.
If access into Torbay is not improved, then as the rate of natural and new growth of residents increases the services required for travel to work, school journeys, and employment needs, traffic gridlock will become more frequent spelling economic disaster for Torbay. Torbay has already experienced upwards of three hour delays due to accidents occurring on the restricted Newton Road do we really have to wait for another major incident or even evacuation, to prove that a single track road serving a population of 150,000 people which virtually doubles in high season, is a totally inadequate road of access for a thriving area of the 21st century. |
